Red cabbage dye is a good acid/base indicator and can be used to test typical household goods. This dye is made by boiling the red cabbage in water until the water turns red. Test a variety of items such as milk, viniger, lemon juice, soaps to see if the are acid or base by introducing a bit of it into a small container of the dye. It will change colour accordingly. I can't remember what the change is exactly but vinegar is acidic and milk is basic. Tap water should be neutral (neither acidic or basic) with a pH of 7.
