In a medium sized pan, mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup all purpose flour, and 1tsp powdered alum. Gradually add 2 cups water, stirring vigorously to prevent lumps (cold water seems to work best), and boil till clear and smooth -- stir constantly! Then add 1 1/2 cups more water. If you wish you can add oil of cinnamon or peppermint, to make it smell nicer, but not necessary... Stir till well mixed and store in a jar in the fridge for up to several months. This makes about 2 pints.
Try the drug store for the powdered alum, and I've always used peppermint extract from the grocery store...

I have found these items at the craft stores. The oils can also be found at some drug stores or pharmacies.

Just go to the local paint store and pick up a box of wallpaper paste. Mix it with water. I think the ratio is 4 to 1 if I remember correctly, but it used to be printed right on the box.
Mixes up nice and smooth. Dries wonderfully.
Doesn't cost much. A lot less hassle.
